Der Auerhahn ist der größte Hühnervogel Europas. Er besiedelt Nadel-, Misch- und Laubwaldzonen von Schottland über Nordeuropa bis in den Osten Zentralsibiriens. Der Auerhahn und das Auerhuhn sind in Deutschland durch intensive Forstwirtschaft oder Störung im Winter durch Skitourismus vom Aussterben bedroht! Als bedrohte Vogelart ist der Auerhahn besonders geschützt. Er steht auf der „Roten Liste“ und darf ganzjährig nicht bejagt werden. Aber auch im restlichen Europa ist er streng geschützt.
