Die Deutung der Ruinen von Ratu Boko gestaltet sich schwierig. Man ist sich bis heute nicht sicher, was genau diese Ruinen ehemals waren bzw. welche Funktion sie hatten. Eine von mehreren Möglichkeiten lautet, dass Ratu Boko vielleicht ein Herrscherpalast war, also ein Regierungssitz alter Könige von Java. Die Ruinen sind nur ca. 2-3 km vom bekannten Tempelkomplex von Prambanan entfernt.
