Die Westerplatte bei Danzig ist eine bewaldete Halbinsel an der Ostseeküste. Bekannt wurde sie durch den Beschuss des polnischen Munitionslagers am 1. September 1939, der Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges. An die polnischen Verteidiger erinnert das 1966 eingeweihte Westerplatte-Denkmal. Das 23 Meter hohe Monument entstand aus 236 Granitblöcken. Es wurde von Franciszek Duszenko, Adam Haupt und Henryk Kitowski entworfen, Danzig, Pomorskie, Pommern, Polen, Europa | The Westerplatte near Gdansk is a wooded peninsula on the Baltic coast. She became known by the bombardment of the Polish munitions depot on 1 September 1939. It was the beginning of World War II. In recall of the Polish defenders the Westerplatte monument was inaugurated in 1966. The 23-meter-high monument was built from 236 blocks of granite.
