Der Waldrapp hat als erwachsenes Tier ein nacktes, rotes Gesicht und einen ebenfalls roten, langen, nach unten gebogenen Schnabel. Der Hinterkopf und der Nacken weisen verlängerte Federn auf, was zu der Bezeichnung Schopfibis oder Mähnenibis geführt hat. Das Gefieder ist schwarz mit grünem Metallschimmer, die mittleren Oberflügeldecken schillern jedoch rötlich.
