Das Teatro Massimo in Palermo ist Italiens größtes und Europas drittgrößtes Opernhaus. Es bietet etwa 3200 Sitzplätze. Die Oper wurde im Stil des Historismus auf der Piazza Verdi erbaut. Architekt war Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, der 1875 mit den Bauarbeiten begann. Nach seinem Tod wurde der Bau 1897 von seinem Sohn Ernesto Basile fertiggestellt. Nach einer Schließung 1974 auf Grund baulicher Mängel blieb das Teatro Massimo wegen korrupter, mafioser Baupolitik über 20 Jahre lang geschlossen. Erst 1997 wurde es zu seinem hundertjährigen Bestehen mit Verdis Oper Nabucco wiedereröffnet, Palermo, Sizilien, Italien, Europa | The Teatro Massimo in Palermo is Italy's largest and Europe's third largest opera house.
