Neben Bodnath ist Swayambhunath das wichtigste buddhistische Heiligtum im Kathmandutal. Es liegt auf einer Kuppe eines Berges westlich von Kathmandu und ist weithin sichbar. Swayambhunath spielt eine wichtige Rolle für die Vajrayana-Buddhisten aus Nordnepal und Tibet, vor allem aber die newarischen Buddhisten des Kathmandutales.
