Überall in Nepal trifft man auf zahllose Votiv-Stupas. Sie kamen im 8. Jahrhundert auf und enthalten häufig Standbilder der vier Jina-Buddhas in den vier Haupthimmelsrichtungen. Man findet sie in der Regel in den offenen Innenhöfen von Klöstern und Profanbauten, an Straßen und Plätzen. Noch heute spielen sie eine wichtige Rolle im täglichen religiösen Leben der Gläubigen. Einheimische Handwerker stellen nach wie vor solche Votiv-Stupas her.
