Description

1993 wurde die Zeche Nordstern in Gelsenkirchen endgueltig stillgelegt. Die Bundesgartenschau (BuGa) bot 1997 die Gelegenheit auf beiden Seiten des Rhein-Herne-Kanals einen Landschaftspark neuen Typs zu gestalten. Das Besondere: Die Bergbauvergangenheit des Standorts wurde miteinbezogen. Heute praegen die Hauptverwaltung der THS mit den denkmalgeschuetzten Foerdertuermen sowie die rote Stahlbogenbruecke ueber dem Rhein-Herne-Kanal das Gesicht des Parks. Am Kanalufer gibt es eine Freilichtbuehne - das Amphietheater und der benachbarte Fahrgastschiffanleger verbindet den Nordsternpark waaserseitig mit dem Gasometer in Oberhausen und dem LWL-Industriemuseum Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg. Der Nordsternpark ist ein Ankerpunkt der Route Industriekultur im Ruhrgebiet sowie der Europaeischen Route der Industriekultur ERIH. Die Nutzung der Turmetagen des Foerderturms des Schachtes 2 der Zeche Nordstern ist sowohl oeffentlich, museal als auch privatwirtschaftlich geplant. Der Turm bildet einen von sieben so genannten Hochpunkten im Revier. Eine 18 Meter hohe Herkules Skulptur von Markus Luepertz macht das Bauwerk weithin sichtbar. Sie wurde bereits aus Anlass des Finales des Kulturhauptstadtjahres am 18. Dezember 2010 offiziell eingeweiht.
