Description

Das Kloster Werden war ein Benediktinerkloster in Werden an der Ruhr, heute ist Werden ein Stadtteil von Essen. Werden war seit etwa 800 ein reichsunmittelbares Fuerstentum. Seit 1653 war der Abt Direktor des Rheinischen Reichspraelatenkollegiums. 1802 wurde das Kloster aufgehoben, die Stadt fiel an Preussen. 1929 wurde der Landkreis Essen aufgeloest und Werden nach Essen eingemeindet. Seit 1945 ist im ehemaligen Klostergebaeude der Hauptsitz der Folkwang Universitaet. Die nach der Saekularisation als Pfarrkirche genutzte Abteikirche wurde 1993 zur paepstlichen Basilica minor erhoben.
