Description

Das Ballett "Theme and Variations" ist ein von George Balanchine choreographiertes Ballett zum letzten Satz von Tschaikowskys Orchestral Suite Nr. 3. Das Ballett wurde für das Ballet Theatre (heute American Ballet Theatre) geschaffen und 1947 uraufgeführt. Das Stück fand großen Anklang und wurde von anderen Ballettkompanien aufgenommen. Das Ballett ist handlungslos und abstrakt. Wie „Ballet Imperial“ (heute Tschaikowskys Klavierkonzert Nr. 2) schuf Balanchine „Theme and Variations“ als Hommage an den kaiserlich-russischen Ballettstil, und er schrieb, das Ballett solle "jene große Periode des klassischen Tanzes heraufbeschwören, als das russische Ballett mit Hilfe von Tschaikowskys Musik blühte". Das Ballett besteht aus einem Hauptpaar sowie vier Solisten und einem Corps de ballet. Presseaufführung des Berliner Staatsballetts am 03. Mai 2019
