Das Haus Weitmar im gleichnamigen Stadtteil von Bochum ging wie viele westfaelische Adelssitze aus einem Bauernhof hervor und wurde um 1464 erstmals erwaehnt. Der Sitz der Familie von Berswordt-Wallrabe wurde ebenso wie die Sylvesterkapelle auf dem Gelaende im Zweiten Weltkrieg durch Fliegerbomben zerstoert. Das Gelaende ist bis heute im Besitz dieser Familie, die neben dem Schlosspark die Galerie M und seit 1990 die Ausstellung Situation Kunst zu Ehren von Max Imdahl fuehrt. Die Stiftung Situation Kunst hat den Bau eines multifunktionalen Erweiterungsgebaeudes, dem sogenannten Kubus, in der Ruine des zerstoerten Haus Weitmar initiiert. Der Kubus wurde im Mai 2010 eingeweiht und eroeffnet. Die Situation Kunst ist Teil des Netzwerkprojekts RuhrKunstMuseen der Kulturhauptstadt Europas RUHR.2010.
