Description

Töpferei ist eine Technologie der Keramikverarbeitung, bei welcher feuchte Erden(Ton/Lehm) geformt und anschließend getrocknet und gebrannt werden, um sie wasserunlöslich und hart zu machen. Die Bezeichnung wird im allgemeinen nur das Herstellen von Gefäße wie Töpfe, Schalen, Schüsseln, etc. und für dekorative Einzelteile verwendet. Tonarbeit ist eine von drei Handwerkskünsten, die zusammen mit dem Menschen erschienen sind. Töpferei ist die älteste Methode zur Herstellung von Gefäßen überhaupt und blieb die wichtigste, bis Metall, Glas und schließlich Kunststoffe allgemein zur Verfügung standen. Um auch poröse Tongefäße wasserundurchlässig zu gestalten und auch aus ästhetischen Gründen, werden niedriggebrannte Tongefäße häufig mit einer Glasur überzogen. Terrakotta oder Terracotta auch Tonplastik (zu ital. terra cotta, "gebrannte Erde") ist bei niedrigen Temperaturen (900-1000 °C) gebrannter, poröser, lehmroter Ton ohne Glasur und meist von verhältnismäßig weicher Beschaffenheit. Terrakotta wird für Kunstgegenstände (z. B. Klein- und Architekturplastik) verwendet.
