Ein Minarett ist ein Moscheeturm, von dessen Brüstung aus der Muezzin die Muslime fünfmal am Tag zum Gebet ruft. Das Wort kommt von arabisch manara (Leuchtturm) und gelangte im 17. Jahrhundert über das türkische Wort Minaret in die europäischen Sprachen. Die ältesten Moscheen besaßen keine Minarette, spätestens ab dem 7. Jahrhundert wurde das Minarett wesentlicher Bestandteil der Moschee.
