In der Neuen Mitte von Oberhausen ist auf dem ehemaligen Gelaende der Gutehoffnugshuette nach nur zweijaehriger Bauzeit 1996 das Einkaufs- und Verguegungszentrum CentrO eroeffnet worden. Es bietet 10500 kostenlose Parkplaetze, ueber 200 Geschaefte und nach amerikanischem Vorbild eine Imbissmeile, Coca Cola Oase. Es gilt als das groesste Einkaufszentrum seiner Art in Europa. Im Aussenbereich gibt es eine 400 Meter lange Promenade mit ueber 20 internationalen Gastronomiebetrieben. Die Konsummeile ist ein Symbol fuer den Strukturwandel und die Modernisierung im Ruhrgebiet: Konsum und Dienstleistung statt der traditionellen Industrien Kohle und Stahl.
