Description
Das Ghetto in Venedig liegt im Stadtteil Cannaregio. Es war seit dem 16. Jahrhundert bis zu seiner Aufhebung 1796 unter Napoleon das abgeschlossene Wohngebiet für die jüdische Bevölkerung in Venedig. Es ist damit Namensgeberin aller Ghettos dieser Epoche. Die meisten der während des Faschismus noch im Ghetto lebenden 286 Juden wurden ab 1943 von den deutschen Besatzern Italiens deportiert und größtenteils ermordet. An die Opfer erinnern die am Campo de Gheto Novo 1980 angebrachten 7 Reliefs des litauischen Bildhauers Arbit Blatas.
