Am 09. und 10. Januar 2010 ist mit einem grossen Kulturfest auf dem gesamten Gelaende des Welterbes Zollverein in Essen das Kulturhauptstadtjahr RUHR.2010 eroeffnet worden. Das Projekt SchachtZeichen, eines der wichtigsten Projekte von RUHR:2010, das vom 22 bis 30 Mai 2010 im Ruhrgebiet realisiert wird, ist exemplarisch vorgestellt worden. Seit Dezember 2001 gehoeren die Kokerei und die Zeche Zollverein zum Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO. Ausserdem ist Zollverein ein Ankerpunkt mit Besucherzentrum nicht nur fuer die nationale Route der Industriekultur im Ruhrgebiet, sondern auch fuer die Europaeische Route der Industriekultur ERIH.
