Der Bergbau hat in Bottrop eine lange Tradtion, die im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Staedten im Ruhrgebiet auch noch eine Zukunft hat. Das Bergwerk Prosper-Haniel ist ein aktives Steinkohlen-Bergwerk in Bottrop. Die Foerderung begann 1863 mit 315 Arbeitskraeften, derzeit werden cirka 4100 Mitarbeiter beschaeftigt. Im Jahre 1974 fasste die Ruhrkohle AG die Zechen Prosper, Jacobi und Franz Haniel zum Verbundbergwerk Prosper-Haniel zusammen. 1998 ging das Bergwerk in den Besitz der Deutschen Steinkohle AG, abgekuerzt DSK, ueber.
