Das Teatro Massimo in Palermo ist Italiens größtes und Europas drittgrößtes Opernhaus. Es bietet etwa 3200 Sitzplätze. Die Oper wurde im Stil des Historismus auf der Piazza Verdi erbaut. Architekt war Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, der 1875 mit den Bauarbeiten begann. Nach seinem Tod wurde der Bau 1897 von seinem Sohn Ernesto Basile fertiggestellt. Nach einer Schließung 1974 auf Grund baulicher Mängel blieb das Teatro Massimo wegen korrupter, mafioser Baupolitik über 20 Jahre lang geschlossen. Erst 1997 wurde es zu seinem hundertjährigen Bestehen mit Verdis Oper Nabucco wiedereröffnet, Palermo, Sizilien, Italien, Europa | The Teatro Massimo in Palermo is Italy's largest and Europe's third largest opera house. It has about 3200 seats. The opera was built in the style of historicism at Piazza Verdi. The architect was Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, which began in 1875 with the construction work. After his death, the building was completed in 1897 by his son Ernesto Basile. The Opera closed in 1974 due to construction defects.
