Das Karl-Marx-Monument mit Sockel ist eine über 13 m hohe und ca. vierzig Tonnen schwere Plastik, die den Kopf von Karl Marx stilisiert darstellt. Sie wurde nach einem Entwurf des sowjetischen Künstlers Lew Kerbel realisiert und 1971 eingeweiht. Es ist das bekannteste Wahrzeichen der Stadt Chemnitz und befindet sich im Stadtzentrum. Bei diesem Denkmal handelt es sich um die zweitgrößte Porträtbüste der Welt. Auf der hinter dem Monument gelegenen Wand sieht man den Schriftzug „Proletarier aller Länder vereinigt euch!“ in den vier Sprachen Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch und Russisch. Karl Marx (*1818 in Trier; † 14. März 1883 in London) war ein deutscher Philosoph, Ökonom, Gesellschaftstheoretiker, politischer Journalist, Protagonist der Arbeiterbewegung sowie Kritiker des Kapitalismus und der Religion. Als sein Hauptwerk gilt "Das Kapital". Karl Marx nahm bei der Analyse und Kritik der negativen Folgen der kapitalistischen Industrialisierung für Natur und Umwelt wie auch für die menschliche Gesellschaft eine Vorreiterrolle ein.
