Das Wasser des Rìo Elqui wird westlich von Vicuña aufgestaut und bildet dort den Puclaro-Stausee. Mit einem Fassungsvermögen von etwa 200 Millionen Kubikmeter beinhaltet er etwa soviel Wasser wie der Edersee in Deutschland, die Kölnbreintalsperre in Österreich oder der Lac de la Gruyére in der Schweiz. Während Letztere zur Energiegewinnung erbaut wurden, dient der Puclaro-Stausee hauptsächlich zur Bewässerung der Obst- und Weinanbauflächen im Valle de Elqui.
