Zu den wichtigsten Vorschriften des vinaya (Ordenszucht) gehört es, daß Mönche sich nur von freiwilligen Gaben ernähren, die sie auf dem morgendlichen Almosengang von Laien erbitten. Erweist sich ein Laie als unwürdig, verweigern die Mönche die Annahme der Gabe. Das Geben gilt als das karmisch segensreichste Tun der Laien, die dadurch am Wege der Mönche beteiligt sind.
